Inspiring Hero Courageously Adapts to Life After Amputation

Inspiring Hero of the Month

Mariah and her family came to Shriners looking for a second opinion on her leg length discrepancy. She was expecting to hear she could have a lengthening surgery, but instead learned that an amputation below the knee would be the most beneficial. It was shocking to hear and a big decision for her family. After several months, they decided to proceed with the amputation. Mariah lives three hours from the hospital, and yet comes to every appointment with a positive attitude. She is learning how to live her new normal, and is currently getting fitted for her first prosthetic.

“Mariah is very smart, brave and witty, and has gained so much confidence this past year,” said her child life specialist. She is so thoughtful and selfless, and her presence is calming.

CLS Kylie Chupka from Shriners Children’s New England in Massachusetts nominated her, and Kids Wish Network awarded Mariah a special Hero gift package. She continues to inspire others with her positivity and determination as she adapts to her major life change.
