“The MacBook Pro, shopping session and surprises made Zach feel so special all day long. You could just see the brightness on his face.”
During pregnancy, Zach’s mother worried that she wasn’t feeling enough movement from him in the womb. An ultrasound was performed, and Zach was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which there is a buildup of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain. A second ultrasound revealed that Zach also had myelomeningocele, a form of spina bifida in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth.
Immediately after he was born, Zach underwent surgery to close the hole in his lower back caused by the myelomeningocele. Just one week later, he went in for a second surgery to place a shunt in his brain to drain extra fluid. Zach has already endured 11 separate surgeries. He also wears braces on his legs due to orthopedic and mobility issues. Zach walks with crutches most of the time, but uses a wheelchair for longer distances.
Despite all of these challenges, Zach remains brave. He enjoys movies, reading books -especially mysteries and history, and his youth group at church. Zach loves electronics and wished for his own laptop. Kids Wish Network computed the perfect wish for Zach, which included him receiving a Macbook Pro from a generous local merchant and enjoying a VIP shopping trip to Crystal Lake Walmart
“Zach never had a laptop,” said his mom Cindy. “The MacBook Pro will be great for school, medical routines and entertainment. He’s very content and doesn’t ask for things. The MacBook, shopping session and surprises made Zach feel so special all day long. You could just see the brightness on his face.”
Zach was also thrilled to experience additional planned activities during his wish. He said, “I got to feed an eel and fish, go to a candy store and play a virtual reality roller coaster ride.” It was especially exciting for Zach, since he is not able to ride real life roller coasters. “The wish was a lot of fun,” said Zach. “Everyone was super nice.”
