Michael was a high school baseball player when he was diagnosed with talengiectatic osteosarcoma, an extremely rare and aggressive type of bone cancer. Michael went through four cycles of chemotherapy. To salvage his limb, surgeons performed a 6 inch resection on Michael’s right femur. He was also diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, an abnormal heart muscle disease.
Michael is a sports fanatic whose favorite team is the Baltimore Orioles. Baseball was his life before he was forced to stop playing due to his cancer diagnosis. He planned on playing in college and then hopefully, professionally. Recently, he has instead developed an interest in fishing and hunting.
Michael works hard at everything he does and has a great sense of humor. His family describes him as an honest, trustworthy, and compassionate individual with a strong moral compass. Michael wished for some time away to simply allow for his family of five to enjoy being together. Born a triplet, Michael has two sisters.
Kids Wish Network planned a trip to the Ft. Myers area of Florida, one that would honor Michael’s wish for family time and also give him time to do some of his newly-found-interest in fishing. Between the trip from Tampa’s airport to their stay at Gulf Breeze Cottages in Sanibel, FL, the family’s first stop was at Tunaskin, a store dedicated to providing apparel and products for aquatic sports enthusiasts. There, Michael’s wish began with gifts of new fishing and beach apparel. During their stay at Gulf Breeze Cottages in Sanibel, Michael and his family took advantage of all of the amenities offered at the island-style cottages.
On the second day of Michael’s wish, Captain Noah’s Fishing Charters took the family on a fishing trip on the waters out of Ft Myers.
“I love fishing, and we had a great day out on the water,” raved Michael. “It was truly a once-in-a lifetime experience.”
After returning to port, the family had dinner at Parrott Key Caribbean Grill, an open-air restaurant that offers Caribbean-style seafood & live music.
The following day, Michael was able to see the beauty of Sarasota, Florida’s beaches and coastlines while on a helicopter ride compliments of Suncoast Helicopters. Lunch was at the Geckos Grill & Pub, where “word has it the best chicken wings in Sarasota are served”. You can’t be in Sarasota without enjoying the often #1-rated beach in the US – Siesta Key Beach, as Michael and family were able to do for the rest of the day.
For his last day in Florida, Michael took a guided kayaking tour set up by Tarpon Bay Explorers and ended it with dinner at Cheeburger! Cheeburger!, a build-your-own burger and shake restaurant decorated in a retro 1950s setting.
