Luke’s grandfather and mother both had Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a rare and inherited condition that causes extra tissue (polyps) to form throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. Although the diagnosis was caught early enough for his grandfather, sadly it was not for Luke’s mom, and she did not survive the disease. Luke and other family members were tested, and it was discovered that he had the genetic marker for FAP. Additional testing also showed the presence of polyps in various stages, and he underwent a surgery to remove the largest ones. Six months later, another colonoscopy revealed more polyps, and two more were surgically removed, however another one is currently under watch, and it’s likely that Luke will need to have another surgery to remove his colon.
Luke is a loving and compassionate child who loves serving others, already feeling compelled to become a preacher. He puts other people’s needs first, although he has so many challenges in his own life that have caused him great pain and difficulty.
Kids Wish Network found out that Luke loves listening to country music… especially songs by his favorite musical artist Keith Urban. So Kids Wish Network partnered with Keith Urban, who just like the singer’s song title, made Luke’s “Once in a Lifetime” dream come true. Luke discovered what his memorable wish would be after completing a fun scavenger hunt. After each mission, he received a card which gave him another clue. The final card revealed that Luke would be seeing Keith Urban perform in concert, and also meeting him after the show!
The day of the Meet and Greet, Luke and his family saw Urban perform in concert at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum. “My favorite song was Blue Ain’t Your Color,” said Luke. It was also very special for him meeting his idol backstage. Luke’s mom Jessica said, “He really enjoyed meeting Urban, watching him sing a couple songs, and answering fans’ questions in the backstage exclusive.” Luke said, “The wish was so fun and it was really cool to meet Keith!”
Luke’s wish also included a weekend full of VIP festivities… They enjoyed spacious accommodations in a modern boutique-style suite at the Residence Inn Bloomington, a bountiful breakfast at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel Bloomington, a bloomin’ bodacious dinner down under at the Outback Steakhouse, and delectable barbecue at the award winning Famous Dave’s. Before heading home, the family also experienced an adventurous day seeing exotic animals at The Miller Park Zoo.
“There was an outpouring of love from so many people,” said Luke’s mom. “The wish gave Luke a desire to focus more on what he wants to do with his life rather than his illness.”
