Charlotte follows her heart and lives her own fairytale

“My favorite part of the show was seeing all of the Disney Princesses!”

Charlotte seemed healthy until a couple weeks after her first birthday… then everything changed. Suddenly she was frequently falling down, and rapidly went from walking independently to not having the strength to crawl or pull herself up. X-rays revealed the unexpected.

Charlotte had a tumor that was compressing her spine. She was rushed into emergency surgery, and it was discovered that she had stage 3 neuroblastoma. The placement and size of the tumor made it difficult to remove all of it, so she also underwent 7 cycles of chemotherapy to shrink the remaining tumor. While it destroyed the cancer cells, Charlotte had another surgery revealing that the tumor wrapped around her aorta, so they left it intact.

She went back to the hospital and was admitted to the ICU after doctors discovered a hormone in the tumor which caused her body’s inability to hold and absorb nutrients. Charlotte remained in the hospital for 13 weeks, and due to the new findings, doctors removed the tumor in a 14-hour surgery. She was intubated and kept sleeping for 5 days. An MRI also showed a blockage in her intestines, so she was once again rushed for another emergency surgery to remove a portion of her intestines that swelled from the previous surgery and chemo.

Charlotte loves Disney princesses, and also felt like royalty during her wish fit for a princess. Her dreams vividly came true with Kids Wish Network purchasing tickets for Charlotte and her family to see Disney On Ice Follow your Heart. “Our seats were amazing,” said Charlotte’s mom Denaly. “We were right across from the performers.”  Charlotte said, “I loved being able to see everyone so close. My favorite part of the show was seeing all of the Disney Princesses!”

During Charlotte’s wish, the family enjoyed accommodations at the Double Tree by Hilton San Diego – Del Mar. The hotel also upgraded the family to a suite with a stunning view. “It was beautiful and everyone was so nice,” said Charlotte’s mom. They also had a memorable day exploring at LEGOLAND California Resort. “My favorite ride was The Dragon roller coaster,” said Charlotte. She also loved having her face painted.

Charlotte will always remember when she felt like a princess in her own fairytale.
