John gains a little more confidence with every visit
Kids Wish Network and Shriners Hospitals for Children- Cincinnati are excited to recognize John as a Hero of the Month for his resilience in handling years of medical treatments and surgeries.
John was born with a large congenital nevus, a rare birthmark, covering the left side of his face. He has undergone laser treatments, as well as much more complicated procedures to remove the nevus and ward off the health complications it can cause. A large congenital nevus is at a higher risk of developing into melanoma, a serious skin cancer.
Over the past several years, doctors have placed tissue-expanders around John’s face to help stretch the skin and cover the areas where the nevus was removed. John has dealt with facial differences throughout his entire life, and his appearance has changed significantly in the last few years.
John is a quiet and respectful 13-year-old boy who is smart and loves to read. He also is quite the competitive UNO player. His nominating Child Life Specialist says she can see him gaining a little more confidence with every visit.
KWN is proud to honor John as an October Hero of the Month!
