Joseph, age 4, just started kindergarten and was excited about school and getting to ride the bus. His second week, the unthinkable happened… he was accidentally let off at the wrong bus stop. He luckily knew the way to his house, and started walking home. His mom was waiting at his designated stop, and when he didn’t get off the bus, she was told he was already dropped off. She went to find him, and when she did, he was lying unconscious in the road surrounded by people. Joseph was the victim of a hit-and-run. He was taken by helicopter to the hospital and underwent surgery for a broken femur, and also endured pain from road rash on his face and head. It was a difficult time of healing physically and emotionally – he would relive the trauma repeatedly in his mind, and was afraid to go back to school and ride a bus ever again. Joseph courageously went through a long recovery process.
His previous preschool teacher nominated him as a Hero and described him as a very sweet and loving child. He’d greet everyone with a good morning and big smile that lit up the room.
Kids Wish Network is so happy to honor Joseph as a Hero of the Month. We love seeing him smile again… Congratulations Joseph!
