TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (September 2019): Devyn Carpenter loves football and basketball, playing both when he was younger. His ability to play ended during a middle school basketball game when he suddenly couldn’t see and went into cardiac arrest. He wasn’t responding after two shocks from an AED, and his mom was told he was gone. After a third shock, he finally came to. Devyn was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick, making the heart less able to pump blood effectively. He underwent surgery for an ICD implant, and his change of lifestyle has been a big adjustment. Devyn’s favorite college football team is the Alabama Crimson Tide, so Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, arranged for him to have an exclusive tour of their football facility and watch them practice during warmups. Kids Wish Network also purchased a generous gift card for Devyn to shop for his favorite things.
“Devyn’s wish will give him a personalized experience with his favorite team,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai.
