LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 2019): Selena Nova has been dancing since she was 5, so we know she can dance. While she continues honing her skills and competing in competitions, she struggles with epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, made her dream come true, sending her to a taping of the hit dance competition series So You Think You Can Dance.
In addition to her admiration for dance, Selena also collects snow globes and loves Disney… she was in for a big surprise! Selena found out about her wish during a family trip to Florida while visiting Kids Wish Network’s headquarters. Her first hint was an archway of gold letter balloons spelling out SYTYCD in the office lobby. She then received a gift bag containing a very meaningful gift… a snow globe that among all the floating luminescence, revealed a very magical message inside. She would soon be going to So You Think You Can Dance and Disneyland!
When it was time for Selena’s California adventure, Kids Wish Network flew Selena and her mom to Los Angeles. On her big day, they arrived on the set of So You Think You Can Dance. It was so exciting experiencing all the high energy of a taped broadcast and watching the awe-inspiring finalists from the studio audience. “I cried after the first set of dancers, it was a surreal and amazing experience for my daughter,” said her mom Amy. Selena also met the show’s complete panel of judges including Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Laurieann Gibson and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval. “We had a great time,” said her mom. “Being at the show was incredible and one of the best experiences ever.”
During the wish, Selena and her mom also enjoyed magical moments at Disneyland, accommodations at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, and a memorable dining experience with freshly crafted fare at Daily Grill.
“My favorite part of her wish was seeing her really happy,” said her mom. “Her wish was a time when everything was about her.”
Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai said, “It’s very special when we can further inspire a sick child by immersing them in what sparks their life passion and joy.”
