NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. (June 2019): Alexandra Wistuk-Hirst’s school day in the second grade started off just like any other… until the afternoon’s student/teacher assembly. She aspires to be a teacher, and Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, sent her to the head of the class, becoming Teacher for a Day at New Brighton Elementary school.
Alexandra was first honored at the school assembly, where school Principal Jason Hall delivered a special message on behalf of Kids Wish Network. Her educational wish would be full of lessons for herself and fellow students. Kids Wish Network donated an abundant gift bank of educational teacher and student supplies to her school in her honor. “It was surprising seeing the amount of school supplies donated,” said Alexandra’s mom Elizabeth. “Being able to benefit the school and kids with what they need was really special for her and our local community.”
Her teacher, Ms. Lisa Patterson, also revealed that Alexandra’s dream of becoming a teacher would be coming true. That following Monday she’d be Teacher for a Day in their classroom, getting to experience what she’s inspired by each day at school. Ms. Patterson gifted Alexandra with a teacher’s bag including all the essentials for her big day – a New Brighton teacher shirt, personalized badge, whistle and water bottle. Alexandra was so excited over the weekend and told her mom, “I want it to be Monday already.” She was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, and the wish gave her something special to experience and also the rewarding feeling of helping others.
Her meaningful day was filled with many fun tasks. Some of her favorites were carrying out the Pledge of Allegiance with Principal Hall during morning announcements, blowing her whistle during cafeteria duty and playground time, and “grading” papers with star stickers in choosing a winner for the coloring contest.
“We’re so pleased to give Alexandra a wish that further inspires her aspirations to be a teacher, as well as honoring her giving spirit for her community,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai.
