HYNDMAN, Pa. (May 2019): Weston Jeffries wasn’t expected to live. He was born with atrioventricular (AV) canal defect, a combination of several heart problems causing a large defect in the center of his heart. He underwent open heart and stomach surgeries well before his first birthday. Weston also has Down syndrome. Playing outside, climbing, and going down slides are the joys that brighten his world, and he can now go to his happy place right in his own backyard. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, made his dream come true, giving him his playground paradise.
So many caring people came together for Weston’s backyard of happiness. Kids Wish Network purchased a massive Gorilla wooden play structure utilizing a grant from Lavale Walmart Store #2027. About a dozen volunteers from Habitat for Humanity of Bedford County came out to assemble Weston’s play structure, filled with fun features including slides, swings, a clatter bridge and climbing tower. “There must have been over a thousand pieces,” said Weston’s mom Margie. “It all came together and everyone worked so hard to have it finished by the afternoon.” Lowe’s of Lavale provided 136 bags of mulch for a safe playing foundation, and Subway graciously fed all the volunteers.
“After going down the slide for the first time, he didn’t want to stop,” said his mom. “He’ll be spending many hours on his new playground, especially with summer coming.”
Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai said, “We wanted to give Weston a special gift where he could experience his happy place every day.”
