St. LOUIS, Mo. (April 2019): Brennan Curry loves hockey, especially watching his favorite NHL team The St. Louis Blues. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, planned a wish that was cooler than ice! Not only would he be attending a St. Louis Blues game, but he’d also meet and be a special guest of one of the players.
Brennan has Chiari malformation, a rare condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. He also has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues that provide strength and flexibility to the skin, bones, blood vessels, and other organs. When interviewing Brennan for his upcoming wish, Kids Wish Network found out that his family would be heading out that night on a trip to Florida, and surprised them with tickets to LEGOLAND. Then the unthinkable happened… about 45 minutes into their road trip, they received a very disturbing call. Their house caught on fire and was severely damaged. Between being displaced from their home and experiencing challenging days with his health, Brennan needed happiness in his life more than ever. Kids Wish Network and the St. Louis Blues teamed up for a victorious wish.
Brennan and his family arrived at Enterprise Center to see the St. Louis Blues play the Detroit Red Wings. Brennan was so excited to attend, not just as a ticket holder, but also as a special guest of Blues player Ryan O’Reilly who personally funded Brennan and his family’s generous tickets to the game. They were given a tour of exclusive areas including the locker room, enjoyed VIP seating, and Brennan also thought it was super cool to have their own server. He was also graciously gifted a large duffle bag filled with lots of Blues swag including a signed and personalized hockey stick and puck from Ryan O’Reilly along with a shirt, hat, sweatshirt, blanket and stuffed animals.
Ice hockey center Ryan O’Reilly met with Brennan and was very supportive of him and everything he’s been through. Brennan told him all about his condition and showed him his scar. O’Reilly told him, “You’re very brave.” Brennan’s favorite part was spending time with him. He said, “I had such a wonderful time.”
“Seeing the look on Brennan’s face when he was walking up to Ryan O’Reilly was priceless,” said his mom Erika. “It was so good to see the twinkle back in Brennan’s eye. He talked about meeting Ryan all the way home and is still talking about it.”
Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai said, “We’re so appreciative to St. Louis Blues player Ryan O’Reilly for his kindness in generously sponsoring Brennan’s family and putting together such a special sack of memorabilia.”
