MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 2019): Brookelynn Dolin has been playing softball since she was 5 years old. She also loves watching her hometown women’s softball team the USSSA Pride – especially her favorite player Alex Powers #11. Alex is a great inspiration to Brookelynn, and she hoped to meet her.
Brookelynn’s passion is playing softball, and she has to be extra careful having scleroderma and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). JDM is a rare and complex autoimmune disease that primarily affects the muscles and skin, causing inflammation and in some cases tissue damage. While she has to take extra precautions when playing softball, Brookelynn doesn’t let her conditions get in the way of what she loves.
Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes to kids with life-threatening illnesses, The Upper Deck Sports Facility and Alex Powers teamed up to make her dream come true. Brookelynn had a private one-on-one practice session at The Upper Deck Sports Facility in her hometown with Alex Powers and the facility’s owner Jason Stidham. She learned different softball techniques like slap hitting the ball and different forms of footwork. In addition to training for over an hour, Alex Powers gave Brookelynn a jersey with her number on it, jacket, hat, and season passes to all the home games for the upcoming USSSA season. Jason also gave Brookelynn a year’s worth of batting cage passes, a shirt, visor, and softball. Brookelynn came with gifts as well, giving Alex and Jason special jerseys from Kids Wish Network that had “Wish Granter” on the back.
“Everything was awesome. Brookelynn felt very comfortable around Jason and Alex, like they were old friends,” said her mom Ashley.
Alex Powers further inspired Brookelynn, telling her to “stay passionate about your dreams and never give up.” Brookelynn had an amazing time on her wish and can’t wait to see her favorite player knock it out of the park in her upcoming games.
“Brookelynn’s positivity is very inspiring, and we’re so happy we could further motivate her with such wonderful people and a meaningful experience,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai.
