Colten, age 4, had a brother diagnosed with a rare autosomal recessive immune disorder, and needed a bone marrow transplant. As part of the process of identifying a match, Colten had several blood samples drawn which revealed he was a perfect match. He had to have additional blood draws and a physical in preparation of becoming a donor. A month later, he had the actual bone marrow harvest. He underwent a surgical procedure to gather the necessary amount of bone marrow, and remained in the hospital overnight. The harvest can be very painful after the procedure, and Colten was very brave in dealing with all the uncertainties of being in a hospital. Colten received care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Even through all the heroic challenges in his special gift to his brother, he remained happy-go-lucky and eagerly expressed his love for his family.
