FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (April 2019): It was an amazingly “marvel”ous time for Nikolai Gerke, who thought it was just another ordinary day at school. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, planned a once in a lifetime Avengers: Endgame experience, and did a grand reveal with Fredericksburg Christian School.
During worship time, Nikolai was called up front before the assembly of staff and students thinking he was involved in a special raffle to attend the senior dance. He had no idea that it was a setup. “His entire faculty got into it,” said Nikolai’s dad Thomas. “They pretended he was up there being raffled off for a prom date.” Then came the plot twist. A big banner from Kids Wish Network was unrolled, along with a personalized T-shirt revealing that Nikolai’s dream was coming true. He’d soon be attending the world premiere of Avengers: Endgame, but not just in the theater… also among all the film’s stars on Hollywood’s red carpet!
His dad said, “It shocked me how many people reveled in his moment. There were over 250 students and faculty clapping and cheering.”

Nikolai has familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare condition where the immune system produces too many activated immune cells called T cells, natural killer cells, B cells and macrophages. He’s been through several surgeries, and experienced a lot of nerve damage after a flare-up. It took him 18 months to learn to walk again, and he’s the only known case to survive an undiagnosed flare-up. Nikolai’s happiness comes from watching Marvel movies and drawing. He never imagined being able to attend a Hollywood red carpet premiere for his favorite series of superhero films. “Thank you so much for making this happen,” said his dad.
“Nikolai has been through so much, and his extraordinary wish is now even more special with all the heartwarming outpour of support,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai.
