SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (February 2019): “I know that unicorns are real,” said Hazel Wilbur, even though she’s only seen them in her favorite books and wishful dreams. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, would bring this mythical creature to life from folklore to her real-life fairytale. After revealing Hazel’s wish she said, “I knew they were real. I knew it!”
Her fanciful wish began when her family arrived at their castle away from home – the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, tucked in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. Hazel was warmly welcomed with balloons, and escorted to a beautifully appointed suite decorated with sparkly décor and a unicorn piñata for her arrival. She felt like a princess… Hazel was graciously bestowed unicorn plush animals, books, soft blankets and slippers, a robe with her initials and cupcakes. “It was unreal, but here is the thing, it was real,” said Hazel’s mom Hayley. “It did happen. And what we experienced next seems equally unreal.”
The next morning, the family arrived at Coyote Hills Park. It was straight out of a storybook… a magical unicorn with a golden horn and hooves, adorned with flowers and dreamy pastels appeared. Hazel delighted in spending time with the unicorn provided by Sheroes Entertainment. It was magical riding the graceful unicorn around the picturesque park. All of her enchanted moments were captured in a professional photo session by Jennifer Carrillo Photography. “This is the best day of my life,” said Hazel. They later enjoyed more royal treatment at the Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort. The hotel also surrounded Hazel in happiness, filling her room with balloons, unicorn-themed gifts and girly accessories.
The following day, the magic continued at Disneyland. There were many special moments bravely going on rides and meeting Disney Princesses. “It was a day so filled with joy,” said Hazel’s mom. “It reminded us that together we have it all. It was a treasure.” During the wish, the family also enjoyed memorable dining at BJ’s Restaurant and Tortilla Jo’s.
She has an autoimmune condition, and her wish gave her something special to be excited about. “Hazel hoped beyond hope to meet a real-life unicorn and to meet Ariel,” said her mom. “Her dreams came true. We are forever grateful.”
Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai said, “The magic of believing is a very special time in a child’s life, and we’re so grateful we can give our Wish Kids their precious moments.”
