Courtney has her own sense of style, and expresses herself through her love of fashion design. Kids Wish Network patterned a wish that was stylishly in vogue. She would be attending a top fashion school – the New York School of Design in the City’s Garment District, along with other tailored surprises.
When Courtney found out about her fashion-forward wish, she was so excited, and made a red and black plaid skirt to wear at her design class. She had no idea at the time just how perfect her design would be. Kids Wish Network traveled Courtney and her parents from Washington, D.C. to New York City on a scenic train trip. Their stay in the City was chic, being lavished in luxurious accommodations at The Knickerbocker hotel in Times Square.
When Courtney arrived at the New York School of Design, they welcomed her with a personalized sign celebrating her attendance. There was also serendipity… to her surprise, the plaid skirt she made and wore on her special day, matched Student Success Instructor James Simon’s shirt! It was pure coincidence, and a funny moment shared having matching outfits. During class, she experienced comradery with other students and new draping techniques. “The class taught Courtney that she can always learn new things… always,” said her mom Crystal. At the end of class, Courtney was touched by the kindness of her classmates. They thoughtfully surprised her with gifts to further inspire her love of designing.
Instructor James Simon also had something else exciting planned. He took Courtney and her parents to meet couture and textile designer Diana Mahrach at Diana’s Fabrics. She spent time talking with her about the fashion industry, and graciously gifted Courtney fabric for an outfit she’s designing. “Meeting Miss Diana was very inspirational,” said Courtney.
During Courtney’s wish trip, she and her family also had fun striking a pose with iconic celebrities at Madame Tussauds New York wax museum. Dining was personalized to her tastes at Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Carmine’s Italian restaurant and The Hard Rock Café, who also invited Courtney’s family on the rooftop for spectacular views of the City.
Courtney has an autoimmune condition, and her wish gave her something special to focus on and be excited about. “Thank you for everything,” said Courtney. “I’m so grateful.”
“Courtney’s wish further inspired her love of fashion design, and was an amazing opportunity for her to learn valuable skills in her aspiring field,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai.
