Michael Almond is a huge fan of the Boston Celtics, especially his favorite player, five-time NBA all-star Kyrie Irving. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, gave Michael a basketball wish that was a slam dunk!
Kids Wish Network flew Michael and his family to watch the Celtics live in action at a home game. They stayed at the beautiful Boston Park Plaza, and felt special being surprised with an abundant spread of goodies in their hotel room. Hotel Manager Shane McWeeny also gave the family a private tour of their state-of-the-art gym and innovative Topgolf Swing Suite. The next day, it was game on… a stretch limo from Real Care Limousines arrived at their hotel and chauffeured them to TD Garden. When they arrived at the venue, there was great anticipation in the air. Michael was warmly welcomed and graciously gifted a basketball signed by each player of the Celtics.
Even before the game, there was plenty of on the court excitement. Michael was one of the Ball Boys, rebounding and feeding balls to the Celtics players during their pregame warm-up. “I made eye contact with Kyrie Irving when I passed the ball to him,” said Michael. “I felt the magic in my hands! I threw balls to my favorite player and the whole team…. it was very cool seeing them all in real life.” He also felt like a basketball star shooting some of his own shots on the court. Afterward, Michael enjoyed the evening’s game which was a slam dunk with the Celtics win. “I gave Kyrie an assist on a shot, got a ball signed by the whole team, and we even won the game,” said Michael. “It was great!”
Michael has Addison’s disease, a disorder that occurs when the adrenal glands don’t produce enough steroid hormones, and an autoimmune condition. Michael deals with daily medical stresses and said his wish has motivated him to keep moving forward. “This was a weekend for him, where he didn’t have to worry about anything. First and foremost where it wasn’t medical,” said his mom Amy. “This was a wish that he wanted…. It was his wish, his dreams and his ideas.”
