KANSAS CITY, Kan. (October 2018): Mackenzie Conner suffers from a life-threatening autoimmune disease. Mackenzie enjoys sports and especially loves soccer. Her favorite team is the Sporting KC soccer team and her favorite player is number 7 Johnny Russell who happens to play for the Scottish National Team as well. It was Mackenzie’s wish to meet the players on the Sporting KC soccer team and attend a live match. Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illness put on their kits and tied their cleats to give Mackenzie a wish she would always remember.
Mackenzie’s wish began at the Children’s Mercy Park Stadium where she attended the Sporting KC training session before game day. Mackenzie was elated about seeing her favorite team’s training session. Not only did she get to watch them train and meet and take pictures with her favorite player Johnny Russell, she even had the entire team sign her soccer ball. Mackenzie was overjoyed and loved every second of her exclusive meeting with Sporting KC. After the training session, Mackenzie and her family enjoyed a wonderful meal at Redrock Canyon Grill.
Mackenzie then went to the Sporting KC game vs Western Conference foe and newly formed expansion team LAFC. Mackenzie was ecstatic about this part of the wish and was nominated as the guest of honor by sitting in a special seat and having her name appear on the Jumbotron. Mackenzie was in for a special surprise when her name went on the big screen as members of the KC Cauldron & the entire stadium began chanting her name before the match. Mackenzie felt special with all the extra attention. To top off her wonderful wish, Sporting KC won their match (2-1) and would move on to the playoffs. Mackenzie had a fantastic time on her wish and left the game with two signed soccer balls, a jersey, scarf, and a gift card for her to buy more soccer merchandise.
Between her special meeting at practice and game day, Mackenzie went to the Legends Outlet Center for a fun outing. Mackenzie received a mall gift card, Dave and Buster’s power cards, and movie passes to AMC theatres. Mackenzie had a relaxing day of shopping and arcade games and even got tickets to the Sea Life Aquarium in Kansas City to be used at her leisure. Lastly, Mackenzie and her family received gift cards to Bread and Butter Concepts and Jack Steak BBQ to use for dinner.
“We especially love creating wishes that further inspire the passions of our Wish Kids,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Tam Lai.
