Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Year designation honors a child who has faced life-altering circumstances with extreme courage. This is Adriana, a 4-year-old treated at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who has been brave, maintained positivity and inspired others by example. Kids Wish Network is proud to have her as our super Hero of the Year.
After being hit by a car, Adriana experienced many unknowns. Her treatments were an intensive process that needed to be carried out over time. Portions of Adriana’s leg and foot were degloved during her injury, and she underwent multiple procedures and skin grafting surgeries to replace patches of skin. Adriana also overcame fears… during healing, it was scary getting out of bed and standing on her injured leg and walking again.
Adriana was previously Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Month, and continues to shine. She visited other children in the hospital also going through difficult challenges, and inspired adults who watched her push through her own struggles. A heartfelt ceremony and party with family, friends and staff of St. Christopher’s celebrated her super Hero accomplishments. Adriana also received a plaque and was awarded a $1,000 Walmart Gift Card, courtesy of Kids Wish Network.
“Throughout her battle she’s danced for the nurses,” said her mom Rosalyn. “When we went to the main hospital, she also made sure that she waved to the kids and spoke to the children and let them know they can do it too. I’m so in tears right now thinking how far my baby has come.”
Kyle Amsler worked with Adriana during her many challenges. In a special video to Adriana, Kyle said, “I was so honored I was able to be one of your Child Life Specialists at St. Christopher’s. I hope you enjoy your special day today… you truly deserve it.”
“Thank you again to Kids Wish Network for recognizing such a deserving patient,” said Child Life Specialist Alexandria Ulisse at St. Christopher’s. “It was truly a very important step in this family’s journey to healing, and we were so thrilled to be part of it.”
Adriana feels special being chosen as Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Year 2017. “She was so excited she couldn’t stop smiling,” said her mom. “Thank you for helping us get through this battle. It was surely a journey. Adriana tells people she is a hero with magical powers.”
