One of the things Kids Wish Network prides itself on is that we try to stay in touch with our Wish Kids, long after their wish is over. These ongoing relationships are one of the things that set Kids Wish apart from other wish granting organizations. Sometimes, we’ll hear from or about our Wish Kids years later. We get to see how they’ve grown, learn what they’ve been able to do. We recently received this happy story about one of our Wish Kids, Drake, and would like to share it with you.
“Drake (age 6) wished to go to Disney World and give Mickey a hug. Upon returning home we noticed a change in Drake. He was happier and more determined to thrive. We realized that the focus for Drake was doctor appointments and therapies that we had actually forgot to stop smell the roses and just let him have fun! Drake has had a few more surgeries, the three holes in his heart are closed, he no longer eats by way of a tube in his stomach.
Four years ago he was diagnosed with Celiac disease and requires a very strict gluten free diet. Within a month of starting the gluten free diet we once again saw a change in Drake. He began to finally grow and gain weight and have more energy. We are now working through high hemoglobin and figuring out the cause of that. Now for some of the fun things Drake has done. He was a cub scout, going camping and earning a badge for archery. He enjoys helping dad every year sell fundraising tickets for our town’s Fourth of July celebration.
Drake loves his job delivering newspapers, which he has done for the past two years. He is very proud when he cashes his check and has money to spend on whatever he wants. Ok, his wants are Mountain Dew, cotton candy ice cream, Starbucks and Legos. Our local theatre has a children’s production every year, and Drake has been involved as part of the chorus for Aladdin, Oliver, and Mary Poppins along with others. Drake celebrated his 18th birthday March 10 on stage as Bundles the laundry man and Drake the butler in Penguin Project’s production of Annie. I am ever so thankful we were able to celebrate his 18th birthday. Thank you Kids Wish for all you do!”
