Brandon loves basketball – his favorite team is the Ohio State Buckeyes.
When Brandon was only a year old, he had a ruptured appendix which led to sepsis. He underwent two abdominal surgeries and remained in the hospital for 3 weeks. Months later, he passed out and was admitted to the hospital for testing. He was sent home the following day. Shortly after, he broke his leg and had to wear a cast. It was also around this time that concerning symptoms appeared.
Brandon was running random fevers, vomiting and wasn’t walking after his cast came off. He went back in the hospital for over a week… this time was different. Further testing revealed something serious. Brandon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that occurs when abnormal cells begin to grow out of control. After discovering his condition, he had multiple hospital stays relating to possible infections. He was also diagnosed with typhlitis, an inflammation of the cecum of the large intestine. Brandon underwent chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions, 30 spinal taps, multiple abdominal surgeries, and the placement and removal of a port. Being hospitalized is especially scary and difficult for a child… one of his longest hospital stays lasted 5 weeks.
Brandon takes medication daily and continues his medical care with ongoing appointments in hematology-oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and pulmonology.
He enjoys puzzles, reading, board games, collecting Pokemon cards and building LEGO sets. Brandon also loves watching basketball – his favorite team is the Ohio State Buckeyes.
