“My favorite part of her wish was seeing her smile the entire time.”
Shai’s life changed after a standard high school physical revealed that she had high blood pressure. But this was just the beginning. Further testing and a biopsy revealed the unthinkable… Shai was diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy, also known as Berger’s disease, a kidney disease that occurs when an antibody called immunoglobulin A (IgA) lodges in the kidneys. It results in local inflammation that, over time, may hamper the kidneys’ ability to filter wastes from the blood. In Shai’s case, it was discovered that both of her kidneys were damaged. She was placed on steroids and blood pressure medication to help manage her condition, however the illness progressed, and she’s been undergoing dialysis. With her kidneys deteriorating to detrimental levels, she requires a double kidney transplant, and awaits her turn to be matched on an extensive kidney transplant list.
Shai is a sensitive and caring girl who loves fashion, the colors teal and purple, all things Disney and watching hockey. Before she became sick, she was very athletic and enjoyed running. Despite all of Shai’s challenges, she keeps a positive attitude, works hard at school, and continues to focus on things that bring her happiness. In addition to Shai’s love of hockey, she also has a passion for another favorite sport… shopping! Shai hopes to one day be a model on a runway, so her dream was to experience a VIP power shopping experience at all of her favorite stores.
During Shai’s wish, her family stayed at the luxurious waterfront Hyatt Regency San Francisco. The next morning, Shai embarked on her shopping expedition to Westfield San Francisco Centre. She first visited Bath & Body Works, and was presented with a generous gift card to shop for all of her favorite fragrance products. The manager also gave Shai, her mom and sister extra gifts. Shai then visited beauty experts at Aveda Salon for a personalized makeover and also took home a swag bag filled with lotions.
Lunch at Nordstrom’s Café Bistro was a memorable celebration. Shai and her family were welcomed with balloons, Clinique gifts, and a stunning view of San Francisco. Claire’s gave Shai a wide variety of purses, earrings and accessories. “Everybody in my family was touched,” said Shai. “Everyone was crying.”
Coach was also very gracious, presenting Shai with a gift card to choose something special from their store. At Express, Shai also received a generous gift card, and had fun selecting all of her favorite styles.
Dinner was a fine dining experience at Bob’s Steak and Chop House. Shea and her mom love steak, and dined on filet mignon. “It was amazing and the best we’ve ever had,” said Shea’s mom Janette.
