Ashlee had noticeable spots on her skin. A visit to her pediatrician confirmed that she had café’ au lait spots, which are flat, pigmented birthmarks (also called “giraffe spots” or “coast of Maine spots”). Testing was performed at a children’s hospital, and she had indicators of neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. These tumors can develop anywhere in the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
Ashlee was also later diagnosed with scoliosis. After a bracing treatment for her spine didn’t help, she had an MRI which revealed she had a tethered spinal cord. Treatment was a long and challenging process. Ashlee had to be hospitalized for 2 months to undergo halo traction prior to the surgical insertion of a magic rod. After the surgery, she started to have a bulge appear in her back. It was discovered that a screw in the magic rod was loose. Ashlee will need to have the magic rod removed, and is currently awaiting a spinal fusion.
Ashlee is intelligent, mature, and has a great sense of humor. She loves fashion, singing in choir class and listening to music.
