“We really enjoyed seeing him so happy. He is still talking about the whole trip and we’ll never forget the amazing time we had.”
KEY LARGO, Fla. (July 2017): Wish Kid Gregory loves fishing and always hoped to catch something special. With the help of Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life threatening illnesses, he reeled in a big one and a postcard perfect wish.
Gregory has Wilson’s Disease, an inherited disorder involving copper not being eliminated in the body properly. Instead, copper accumulates in the organs, and can escalate to life threatening levels. This condition has its challenges for Gregory. The medications that he takes make him tired, he must adhere to a strict diet, and he cannot participate in any activities that can cause him to overheat.
Kids Wish Network brought Gregory and his family to paradise with a vacation in Key Largo. Upon arrival, they checked in to the exclusive Ocean Reef Club, a luxurious resort with picturesque postcard views. “They had food waiting for us when we got there,” said Gregory’s mom Lisa. “The staff was all so nice and helped us every day.”
The next morning, the family enjoyed an amazing deep sea adventure with Round Up Fishing Charters. Gregory had the big catch of the day reeling in a 25 pound Skipjack tuna. “I thought it would have taken me longer to bring in the fish,” said Gregory.“My favorite thing was catching all the mahi-mahi and tuna.” After their fishing expedition, the family enjoyed a beautiful sunset dinner at Sundowners, taking in stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico.
The following day, Gregory made a new friend, getting in the water for an interactive dolphin experience at Dolphins Plus. “I really liked all the cool moves that I got to do with the dolphins,” said Gregory. “I enjoyed learning how to have Axl the dolphin do his tongue wiggle, shark impression and painting.” After the dolphin encounter, the family went back to their resort and enjoyed delectable waterfront dining at Burgee Bar.
“All of it was amazing,” said Gregory’s mom. “I loved seeing the smile on his face throughout the whole wish. He actually got to relax and not think about anything but being a kid and having fun. We really enjoyed seeing him so happy. He is still talking about the whole trip and we’ll never forget the amazing time we had.”
“Many of our Wish Kids deal with stresses of their illnesses on a daily basis,” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Anna Lanzatella. “A fun vacation doing all of their favorite things is so important for them. It gives our Wish Kids something special to look forward to and memories that remain a special haven in their minds.”
