His happiness comes from playing his guitar, performing, singing and acting.
Roman was showing symptoms of his conditions at an early age, but doctors did not initially diagnose. When he was a toddler, he had hypermobile joints and he bruised abnormally. He was also waking up in the night with what his family thought were night terrors. It turned out to be hypoglycemia, which then triggered seizures that caused pressure on his brain and damaged his vision. It was later discovered that he also had Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a group of inherited disorders that affect the connective tissues, primarily the skin, joints and blood vessel walls. Years later he was also diagnosed with a tethered spinal cord, severe cranio-cervical instability, intracranial hypertension and pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs). Life has been a series of surgeries for Roman. He underwent risky neurosurgeries in which his spinal cord was released at the ligament allowing it to float freely, another to attach his skull to his neck with rods and screws, and the implanting of a VP shunt. Since then, he’s also had a laparoscopic appendectomy which turned into multiple surgeries after it led to an infection that caused him to go into septic shock. After discovering the cause, he had to have the abscesses drained, his shunt removed, a temporary draining device inserted into his brain, and then another shunt implanted. A couple of months ago, he also underwent an emergency surgery after his shunt catheter that goes into the ventricle in his brain was starting to poke through his scalp.
Roman has lived his life differently than most other kids. Aside from all of his surgeries, he also has regular doctor visits with a neurologist, neurosurgeon, endocrinologist, cardiologist and ophthalmologist. His conditions have also kept him from enjoying fun childhood activities like playing sports and riding rollercoasters.
Roman is described as an old soul – he’s mature, insightful, grateful and compassionate. Despite all of his traumas, he maintains his bravery and sunny disposition… and he perseveres. Roman excels in school and focuses on his goal of becoming a surgeon so that he can help to heal others. He’s inspiring, and does not let his conditions hold him back. Some memorable accomplishments for Roman include him shadowing a neurosurgeon for a week, building his own computer, and out of 500 applicants, being selected along with 4 others by Ryder University to sing off Broadway. His happiness comes from playing his guitar, performing, singing and acting.
