When he was a small child, Robert’s x-ray and MRI showed his spine was “swollen”. It looked to have small nicks and appeared to be severed in one spot. He was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a neurological disorder caused by inflammation across both sides of one segment of the spinal cord. The inflammation causes such extensive damage to nerve fibers of the spinal cord that it may result in viral infections or abnormal immune reactions.
Robert is now considered a high functioning quadriplegic and struggles with compromised breathing, an inability to control his body’s temperature, autonomic dysreflexia – a sudden onset of high blood pressure, and spasticity. In recent times, Robert has been able to gain some of his movement back through physical and occupational therapies.
Kids Wish Network recently partnered with the world’s largest pool table manufacturer, Olhausen Billiards Manufacturing, Inc., to grant a once-in-a-lifetime wish for Robert. Kids Wish Network wanted to incorporate Wish Kid Robert’s love for playing billiards into a dream-come-true. Robert plays pool to take his mind off his illness while undergoing treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Kids Wish approached Olhausen Billiards Manufacturing, Inc., about participating as a sponsor for Robert’s desire to have his very own pool table. Olhausen was more than willing to become a Wish Granter.
For his wish, Robert was presented with a brand-new, specially designed billiard table described by Olhausen as an 8’ Reno with Sienna finish, exotic and dense Jatoba rails, and dark green cloth. The pool table was generously designed and donated by the corporate office of Olhausen Billiards Manufacturing, Inc., located in Portland, TN, and was constructed in the basement of Robert’s family home by the kind people at Nashville Billiards. Olhausen Billiard’s Vice President of Operations Brian Roselli stopped by to give Robert some pool playing tips. This all happening just one day before Robert had to leave home for a major surgery.
Robert was kept in his room, not sure exactly what was going on, while the pool table was being put together in his basement. When the time came, and the table was all together, Robert was told to come out and take a look at his surprise. To his surprise, he saw a brand-new specially designed pool table complete with a western-themed wooden plaque that read, “Robert’s Pool Table.”
The surprise pool table wasn’t all that Robert and his family were treated to. During the big reveal at Robert’s home, the family was provided lunch by the delicious local Texas Roadhouse and creative yummy treats from The Sweetest Batch Cupcakes delivered by the always-dependable Errand Boy Couriers. The many special moments during the reveal of Robert’s new pool table was captured by the friendly staff at Classic Creations Photography Studio.
“We are always looking at ways to give back to the local community,” said Brian Roselli, Vice President of Operations for Olhausen Billiards Manufacturing, Inc. “We were happy to make come true Robert’s wish for his very own, specially-designed pool table to help him pursue his passion for playing the game.”
“I am so happy to see Robert get a wish, it is so much more than just getting a wish because it’s special for him to see somebody other than his mom and dad care about him.” James Lilley, Robert’s father shared.
