“Even though his burn changed his way of life, his ability to cope with everything made it so that he still maintained a positive attitude.”
It was a typical day for Carter and his brother who were working on doing a magic trick that involved fire. Little did they know that this would change Carter’s life. The fire fell to the ground and caused a very unexpected flash fire as the flame had connected to gasoline that had leaked from a nearby container. Carter was burned on his face, shoulder, hands, and arms and was rushed to Maricopa Integrated Health System’s Arizona Children’s Center for emergency care.
During his two week stay in the hospital, Carter had to endure two surgeries and multiple painful dressing changes to help his skin heal, and yet, he continued to be polite and positive to all of the staff that worked with him. “Despite all the struggles he faced, Carter remained a positive and cheerful young man,” explained his Child Life Specialist who nominated him for Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Month program. She also spoke of his bravery in helping to change his bandages and dressings.
“This award brightened his spirits and brought him joy!” said Carter’s mom after he received the Hero award. Carter used his gift card, part of the Hero package Kids Wish Network offers to those honored as Hero of the Month, to purchase a remote control helicopter drone.
We see the immense courage that it took for Carter to endure so much pain and change, and yet, he still holds his big smile. Kids Wish Network stands with his nominator who said it perfectly, “I cannot wait to watch Carter grow and be a huge success someday!”
It is with great pride that we honor Carter’s bravery by recognizing him as Kids Wish Network’s along with Maricopa Integrated Health System’s Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Carter!
