“He has been through more than he knows and always has a smile on his face.”
Bryce is a kind young man who began to get terrible headaches. This concerned his family, and they knew that he needed to be seen by a doctor. Once at the hospital, he was given an MRI that showed four lesions on his brain that would need monitoring. Headaches were the only symptoms that he had until eight months later when he began to have seizures; it was then that he was referred to Le Bonheur’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for more testing.
As Bryce and his family prepared their hearts for the scheduled testing that was ahead, they had no idea that Bryce would have to experience some of the hardest moments of his childhood before the hospital admission even took place. Just two weeks before his Le Bonheur admission, the Great Flood of 2016 devastated the entire nearby area and destroyed 102,000 homes in the parish. Bryce and his family lost everything.
“In the middle of sorting through the chaos and mourning the loss of an entire town, Bryce and his mother remained committed to finding answers for Bryce’s seizures and traveled to Memphis,” wrote the Child Life Specialist who nominated him for Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Month Program. “In spite of losing his home just days before his admission, Bryce was resilient throughout his stay.”
Bryce bravely focused on his health and allowed the one week stay for testing to be a distraction to him rather than focusing on all of the loss that he had just experienced. It was during this stay that he was diagnosed with Cortical Dysplasia which is an abnormality of brain development that is congenital and can cause epilepsy.
Although this story could end here and would prove that Bryce is certainly a Hero, it does not stop! When he found out that he was chosen for Hero of the Month and received a Wal-Mart gift card, his mom assumed he would replace something that he had lost in the flood. “Not my Hero! He wants to buy things for kids that lost everything too. He has the biggest heart,” exclaimed his proud mother.
Even though Bryce and his family are still squeezed into a small apartment after losing everything, he generously went out and purchased toys to give to other children.
“He has been through more than he knows and always has a smile on his face. This surprise came at a time when nothing seemed to be right. It allowed him to find his spirit again; to help people,” said Bryce’s mom when referring to receiving the Hero of the Month award.
It is with great pride that we honor Bryce’s bravery and generosity by recognizing him as Kids Wish Network’s along with Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital’s Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Bryce!
