“Shane’s goal has been to be a positive role model for other kids his age”
Shane is a great model of what a Hero truly is. When he was very young, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy which is caused by brain damage and creates limits and difficulties with motor skills, muscles and movement. He could have chosen to allow cerebral palsy to slow him down, but instead he has used this diagnosis to better his life and the lives of others.
Shane has been receiving physical therapy treatment at Memorial Hospital West Outpatient Rehab for more than five years in order to become stronger. Each time he comes for an appointment, he has a big smile and is ready to accept whatever challenge is presented to him. Often times, his therapists have been known to “argue” for him to be one of their appointments because of his inspiringly positive attitude.
Not only has Shane been working hard to improve his own strength, he uses his situation to inspire others. When bullies at school wanted to tease him, Shane took it as an opportunity to educate them about his condition and bring awareness to the true strength anyone with cerebral palsy has.
Memorial Hospital West has often asked Shane to help other patients through the process. “Shane does not hesitate to tell them about his journey, his starting point, the struggles he has endured and how hard work has allowed him to get to where he is now, “ said his physical therapist who proudly nominated him as a Hero candidate.
Shane has participated in and mentored a group that helps kids with similar challenges overcome obstacles. “He has been invited to and confidently participated in numerous fashion shows, has attended various special needs fairs and maintains a very active role in his community by dedicating his time and volunteering in his church and his community library.”
Shane has mastered a great feat – he has taken the “dis” out of disability and has proven time and time again that you can touch many lives through the abilities that you have by being who you are, no matter what your circumstance is.
It is with great pride that we honor Shane’s strength by recognizing him as Kids Wish Network’s along with Memorial Hospital West’s Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Shane!
