Wish Kid Matthew Takes a Bite Out of the Big Apple

What started off as an enjoyable spring break with family ended up involving a week-long stay at the hospital for Matthew after he was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. Additional testing with his endocrinologist discovered that Matthew also has Celiac disease. His stomach lining becomes inflamed from gluten, which in turn makes it harder for Matthew to regulate his sugar levels.

According to his dad, Matthew is a tenacious and level-headed “sponge that absorbs everything” from Greek and Roman mythology to social activities as varied as golf and bowling and takes most everything in stride. For his forever wish, Matthew wanted to see a Broadway show, the hit Hamilton, in particular.

Matthew’s wish to go to see a Broadway show in NYC granted by Kids Wish Network was revealed to him in a video recorded by Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for creating and starring in Matthew’s favorite Broadway play, Hamilton.

Kids Wish Network flew Matthew and his family up the East Coast to the Big Apple. A luxury SUV courtesy of Super Shuttle made its way to The Roosevelt Hotel where the family would be staying while taking in the sights and sounds of NYC.

Wish Kid Matthew and family getting ready to see Hamilton

Before enjoying dinner their first night at Hard Rock Café, the family had fun at neighboring Madame Tussauds wax museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not Times Square. A trip to New York should include when possible a visit to the Statue of Liberty and the 911 Tribute Center, which both sponsored Matthew’s wish. Matthew was particularly touched because his tour guide for the 911 Tribute Center survived that infamous day.

While on his forever wish, Matthew and his family took in hit Broadway shows – Phantom of the Opera, Aladdin, and Hamilton – with tickets generously donated by Phantom Company, LP and the Broadway Cares Foundation. Our Wish Kid enjoyed a chauffeured ride to Hamilton from US Transportation Services. To complete his evening, he had been donated a tuxedo from Suit City of Orlando before he left his hometown to wear on his wish.

Other dinners the family enjoyed during Matthew’s magical time in New York were at the celebrity-owned Southern Hospitality BBQ and the storied steakhouse The Palm West. Keeping with the theme of Hamilton, Matthew also toured the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House.
