“LaKalvin has lived a life full of adversities in his health and yet he displays many brave qualities that make him shine as a Hero”
When LaKalvin was very young, he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy which is caused by brain damage at a young age and creates limits and difficulties with motor skills, muscles and movement.
LaKalvin is now 16 years old and has been going to Alabama Children’s Rehabilitation Services since he was only 21 months old. During his young life, he has undergone a colostomy reversal, eye surgery and bilateral heelcord and hamstring lengthening procedures. Although LaKalvin is limited in his strength to walk, he pushes himself to walk as much as possible without the use of a wheelchair or a walker. He also works very hard to play the drums!
The battle of Cerebral Palsy alone would claim LaKalvin as our Hero, but his story continues. LaKalvin has very limited hearing and wears bilateral hearing aids. He also has very limited vision and without the use of his glasses, he would not be able to see anything. Even though his eyesight is poor, he loves his hobby of painting.
LaKalvin’s Care Coordinator is very proud of all that he has accomplished. “Although LaKalvin has many disabilities, he displays a life without limits. He has the mindset ‘let me try by myself before you assist me’. He shows incredible strength and is very kind to everyone he meets. He also displays kindness and generosity towards his fellow classmates with disabilities.”
It is with great pride that we honor LaKalvin’s endurance by recognizing him as Kids Wish Network’s along with the Alabama Children’s Rehabilitations Services Hero of the Month. Congratulations, LaKalvin!
