“Elise is a Heroic child – Her father is in the military and she is a strong girl with a positive outlook!”
An allergic reaction at any level can be a bit scary, but the level that Elise’s body reacted to an unknown source that she inhaled was not only scary, but life threatening. Her body quickly went into Anaphylactic Shock.
Anaphylaxis occurs upon exposure to something that the body is allergic to and can begin within seconds of contact with the allergen. It can cause the body to go into shock, cause the blood pressure to lower suddenly and the airways to begin to close.
You can only imagine how 11 year old Elise felt when this happened to her very unexpectedly. Thankfully, those around her reacted quickly, and she was rushed to the ER and admitted to the ICU for care. She was given hydration, IV medication, oxygen, and even had to experience using an Epi Pen for the first time.
“Every single day Elise flashed her legendary smile, even with her experience,” stated Elise’s Child Life Specialist at Maimonides Medical Center. “She demonstrated patience and responsiveness with the doctors and nurses as she worked with them to explain her symptoms, her reactions, and trying to figure out what the trigger was for the event. She is a strong girl with a positive outlook, a pleasant attitude, and a willingness to engage with child life specialists.”
It is with great pride that we honor Elise’s bravery by recognizing her as Kids Wish Network’s along with Maimonides Medical Center Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Elise!
