“Sage and Alex will forever be known as great Heroes”
While making a long road trip home from their grandfather’s funeral, Alex and Sage were involved in a very serious car accident. The family was rushed to the hospital, Sage with a concussion and Alex with a traumatic brain injury, loss of consciousness, a concussion and many cuts and lacerations. These young brothers went through many procedures, x-rays, and scans, and Alex even endured getting staples on his scalp.
This experience alone would certainly give them the title of “Hero,” however, they experienced something even more difficult: the loss of their 16 month old brother in the accident. Alex and Sage both loved and cherished their young toddler brother and have had to work very hard to become healthy and to take the courageous steps to begin their daily routines once again.
While at Carilion Children’s Hospital, the medical staff was very impressed with both boys. “He is very stoic and gentle and loving” stated Karen, RN, about Alex. “In the midst of losing his brother and being in a hospital far from home, Alex remained strong and was always appreciative of the care he received.”
Karen wrote, “Sage is a kind and loving child as evidenced by the attachment he had shown toward his baby brother. He endured numerous tests and scans with patience and dignity. He never complained!”
Kids Wish Network is very proud of Alex and Sage. We see the great bravery and strength hidden within their smiles when they received the Hero of the Month award. Our thoughts are with the family as they continue to move forward during this difficult time.
It is with great pride that we honor Alex and Sage’s courage by recognizing them as Kids Wish Network’s along with the Carilion Children’s Hospital Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Alex and Sage!
