“Olivia Never Complained Once”
What started off as a fun afternoon jumping around on a trampoline turned into a thoroghly unexpected hospital stay for two nights for 9 year-old Olivia. She fell off the trampoline and broke her left arm, and because it was such a bad break, she required surgery at Maryland Children’s Hospital, an hour away from her home in Baltimore.
Despite the unexpected experience of dealing with several healthcare professionals when she was exhausted and in pain, Olivia proved to be a brave little trooper. Even though she really wanted to go to sleep and was afraid of needles, she took an interest in her IV fluids and asked her nurse several questions about her care.
“Olivia never complained once! What a trooper,” said the child life specialist who nominated Olivia to be a Hero of the Month. Olivia was strong as she fought through so much pain to do the normal tasks that we take for granted such as getting dressed and getting in and out of bed. Through it all, Olivia always made sure to say please and thank you to those helping her throughout her stay in the hospital.
Rather than being nervous or scared about her upcoming surgery that would require pins to be put into her arm, Olivia had only one worry – she wanted to make sure her cast was her favorite color, pink!
It is with great pride that we honor Olivia’s bravery by recognizing her as Kids Wish Network’s along with the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Olivia!
