“EVEN AMID THE PAIN, HE WAS IN GOOD SPIRITS”
Luis was only 6 years old and yet he had experienced something more traumatic than many of us will ever experience in our lifetime.
While crossing the street with his father and younger brother, Luis was hit by a driver who recklessly drove through a red light. The driver stopped for a short moment, got out of his vehicle, but then quickly got back in and drove off. Luis was left lying on the street with a fracture in his right clavicle, a dislocated hip, many cuts and bruises, and a laceration on his liver. When he was brought to the emergency room at Maimonides Medical Center in New York, he told the staff that “everything hurt”.
Though experiencing excruciating pain during his hospital stay, Luis bravely endured many procedures and yet remained very kind and polite to the staff.
“He was very responsive, engaging, and expressive, and even amid the pain, he was in good spirits. He is a true Hero,” proclaimed his Child Life Specialist who cared for Luis during his stay at Maimonides .
With great courage and strength, Luis has taught himself to walk once again and is eagerly waiting for the moment that his doctor will release him to participate in gym class at school. Not only is he back to school and working to get back into his normal routine, he has caught up with all of the school work that he missed and continues advancing in his class, all while enduring extensive physical therapy.
It is with great pride that Kids Wish Network, along with Maimonides Medical Center, honors Luis’s courage by recognizing him as one of our Heroes of the Month. Congratulations, Luis!
