“NOT ONLY IS BROOK TOUGH AND VERY BRAVE, SHE IS ONE OF THE SWEETEST GIRLS WE HAVE EVER MET”
Brook is one of the estimated 3% of Americans who have scoliosis. This condition creates an abnormal curve in the spine. If the spine is curved too much, surgery is required.
Brook’s scoliosis was so severe she needed to have spinal fusion surgery and was admitted to Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for the incredibly painful surgery. Spinal fusion surgery usually takes at least 4-5 hours. It often requires patients to stay in the hospital for 5 days, and yet takes many more weeks to fully recover.
“We never heard one complaint!” said Brook’s Child Life Specialist who nominated her for Hero of the Month because of the incredible bravery and strength that she saw in Brook during her hospital stay. “Not only is Brook tough and very brave, she is one of the sweetest girls we have ever met.”
After surgery, Brook worked very hard to push through to begin to walk again, to be involved with activities in the hospital, and do all that was necessary in order for her to heal.
Brook is now doing so much better. On her most recent follow up appointment, she even stopped in to visit the medical team that worked with her and thanked them for all that they did for her.
It is with great pride that we honor Brook’s bravery by recognizing her as Kids Wish Network’s along with the Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Brook!
