During pregnancy, Zachary’s mother worried that her son was not moving around enough while in the womb, so an ultrasound was performed to see what was going on. During this ultrasound it was discovered that Zachary had a build-up of fluid in the cavities deep within his brain and was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus can cause problems with how the fetus develops. After a second ultrasound was performed to check on Zachary in the womb, it was also discovered that he suffered from myelomeningocele, a form of spinal bifida in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth.
Immediately after he was born, Zachary was taken into surgery to close the hole in his lower back caused by the myelomeningocele. Just one week later, Zachary went into his second surgery, this one to place a shunt in his brain to drain the extra fluid that had built up. Zachary, who is still just a boy, has already had to endure 11 separate surgeries. Zachary also suffers from orthopedic and mobility issues, wearing braces on his legs. He walks with crutches most of the time, but uses a wheelchair for longer distances.
Despite all of this, Zachary remains a brave boy with a dream-big type attitude. Zachary loves movies, reading books, especially mysteries and history. His mother describes Zachary as a brave boy who enjoys his youth group at church. Zachary really tries to stay up-to-date with all of today’s newest technology.
