Sam was not breathing when he was born and was placed on life support in the NICU for six weeks. Eventually Sam’s oxygen levels started to improve, but doctors noticed that he had a small hemorrhage on his brain. As he grew older, Sam was not meeting developmental milestones, and would eventually be diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a disorder of movement, muscle tone, or posture that is caused by damage that occurs to the developing brain, most often before birth. Sam’s symptoms became more severe, and he’d frequently fall over when doing something as simple as walking around his home. Various therapies and leg braces have helped Sam gain better control while walking. He also has a special education plan at school to help him achieve goals.
Sam is funny and caring. He’s also very social, loves school, and has a lot of friends. Sam enjoys collecting coins, playing video games, watching sports and comedies on TV, and especially singing all of his favorite country songs.
