“A positive attitude is everything”
Spinal surgery is often one of the most invasive and dangerous surgeries and may require an inpatient stay of three to four days. Abby faced spinal surgery for her scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, with such courage, she just had to be recognized as one of Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Month.
The surgery involves an incision several inches down the back. Multiple screws and hooks are applied, along with a steel rod to straighten the spine and reduce the curve as much as possible. Risks include possible paralysis. Even with all the pain after surgery, most patients are required to get out of bed and walk the day after surgery.
According to her Child Life Specialist, Abby’s positive attitude made her accomplish the goals for post surgery in record time. “She is an exemplary patient, and my wish for her is to teach other spine surgery patients….how to keep a positive attitude through trying times.”
As part of the Hero package, Abby received a gift card she intends to use towards school supplies. She also received her very own Hero bear that she named Francis, after her child life specialist who Abby said “helped calm my nerves right before surgery.”
It is with great pride that we honor Abby’s courage by recognizing her as Kids Wish Network’s along with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville, SC’s Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Abby!
