“Tom Brady …the highlight of the visit!”
After helping win his state’s high school championship football game, Will injured his knee. Fluid was drained, rehab commenced, and this sports fanatic was quickly back doing what he loves – indulging in yet another sport, running for the track team. Like an annoying boomerang, his knee pain returned, and this time, the x-ray indicated a stress fracture. To be certain, however, Will had an MRI which uncovered a very serious diagnosis: osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that starts in the bones but can quickly spread throughout the body.
Despite the tremendous setbacks he experienced during his senior year of high school, he attended as many football (and basketball) games, as he could still enjoy them as a spectator, and he even helped coach some members of his track team when they needed his help. A huge football fan, Will enjoys following his favorite team, the New England Patriots, each and every NFL season.
Kids Wish Network partnered with the New England Patriots to grant Wish Kid Will Maki’s dream of meeting members of the highly successful and storied franchise.
Kids Wish Network sent Will and his family to Foxborough, MA, where it worked with the New England Patriots to arrange a special meeting with All-Pro quarterback Tom Brady. Will’s visit began with a surprise meeting with Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft, who gave Will and his family a private tour of his offices and showed him the team’s four Lombardi Trophies, eight conference championship trophies, and four Super Bowl rings.
The heart-warming feeling of being able to grant a wish like this was really felt by the four-time Super Bowl winning quarterback. When Will compared his state championship ring to the Patriots’ Super Bowl rings, Brady explained, “Hey, they all mean the same. It means you’re a champion, too. That’s pretty cool.”
Will received nothing less than VIP treatment for the entirety of his wish. During the trip that took Will from his hometown in Wisconsin to Boston, Will and his family were honored guests at the Hampton Inn Boston-Norwood. They were also treated to wonderful and creative meals at The Chateau and British Beer Company. To attend all the activities, including a VIP tour of Gillette Stadium and getting to the Patriots game, the family was provided superb limo service by Above All Transportation.
Will’s father Wade recalls the time spent on Will’s wish stating, “It was a really great experience! Will met the owner of the Patriots who let Will try on those massive Super Bowl rings. Then, he met Tom Brady who spoke with Will and took a few pictures with him. It was the highlight of the visit.”
Update: Will Maki lost his strong battle against cancer and passed away January 30, 2017. Kids Wish Network grieves with Will’s family and friends.
