A fainting episode and subsequent testing lead to a diagnosis of a portal vein thrombosis, a blood clot blockage of the portal vein (the blood vessel that brings blood to the liver from the intestines).
Makenna is still monitored by and sees physicians in multiple states. She takes a blood thinner and still has not returned to full activity. One of the ways she is occupies her time is by watching YouTube videos about makeup and fashion. This kind-hearted social butterfly thinks that some day she might become a doctor so she can help other kids who have had more than their fair share of doctor visits.
Kids Wish Network wanted to give Makenna and her family a break from her illness, so we flew them from their home state of Kentucky to beautiful Catalina Island for a once-in-a-lifetime dream vacation. Upon initial arrival in Santa Ana, California, Exclusive Sedan Service drove the family to Island Express Helicopters, Inc., for a helicopter ride to Makenna’s final destination, Catalina Island, where they were guests of Catalina Island Vacation Rentals.
During their stay on the island known for its wildlife, Makenna and her family had access to 37 acres of native exotic plants in Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens through arrangements made by the Catalina Island Conservancy. Other adventures included a snorkeling trip courtesy of Island Water Charters and a kayaking trip to Frog Rock arranged by Descanso Beach Ocean Sports, Inc.
Dinners were compliments of the nautically-themed Bluewater Avalon, and bowling was included with dinner at Three Palms Avalon Arcade.
