Emily’s life was forever changed this past December when she suffered her very first seizure. She was immediately placed on seizure medicine, but instead of her seizures getting better, they got worse, much worse. Emily was taken to the hospital for testing to see what could be causing these severe seizures, only for doctors to find that her brain was heavily inflamed and her condition continued to get worse.
Following a brain biopsy, Emily was diagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis or AE. AE is a serious medical condition in which the immune system attacks the brain, heavily impairing everyday function. To help treat her condition, Emily was placed on new medications and faced 15 rounds of chemotherapy. Unfortunately, she is still experiencing seizures daily, but doctors are working vigorously to find the best way of keeping them under control.
Emily is described as “Wonder Women”, and even collects items depicting the famous brave and strong female superhero to remind her who she aspires to be. Her condition has affected much of her daily activity including being able to attend school. Emily spends most days watching her favorite television shows on Cartoon Network and movies from the 80’s and 90’s. A happy girl, Emily hopes to visit Disneyland someday, so she can take a photo with the world famous Mickey Mouse.
