Brayden’s preschool teachers noticed his excessive thirst and use of the restroom and brought the information to his mother’s attention. As soon as mom described the symptoms to Brayden’s doctor, the doctor ordered a blood test that confirmed his suspicion. Brayden had Type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes happens when your immune system destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose get into your cells to give them energy. Without insulin, too much glucose stays in your blood. Over time, high blood glucose can lead to serious, life threatening problems with your heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, and gums and teeth.
Brayden is on an insulin pump which administers life saving insulin four times a day. He must also monitor his blood sugar a minimum of 10 times a day. Brayden’s biggest disappointment is that the illness has made him set aside his dream of joining the military some day. He also is unable to participate in football and wrestling, the sports he so enjoyed playing.
Now instead, this small town boy loves his fishing and hunting trips with his Dad and watching his favorite football team, the Vikings, on TV. More than anything, Brayden would like to go to Disney World.
Kids Wish Network can’t wait to give Brayden a chance to take a break from always thinking about his illness and experience a once in a lifetime wish; check back for more details about his wish!
