“I loved seeing Star Wars at Disney World”
Elijah is a 5-year-old little boy who sometimes sucks his thumb. When his mom noticed that his finger was starting to swell, she took him to his pediatrician and he was diagnosed with an infection caused by his habitual thumb-sucking and placed on medication. A week later, he experienced flu-like symptoms and lost five pounds. His stomach was hurting him so much, he couldn’t even walk to the restroom. When his mother went to take him back to the doctor, she found Elijah unresponsive. Elijah was admitted to the hospital for dehydration so severe that the nurses could not initially insert a PICC line in his veins to start fluids. Blood work showed that Elijah’s glucose levels were over 600, and he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little to no insulin. He spent six days in the hospital as doctors tried to get his condition under control.
Currently, Elijah is being treated with both short-acting and long-acting insulin. Short-term insulin is usually taken about 30 minutes before a meal and its effects tend to last about five to eight hours. In contrast, long-term insulin lasts for 20-26 hours covering the individual’s insulin needs for a full day and is often taken at bedtime.
Elijah struggles with rapid drops in blood sugar that have been known to plummet to very low levels. Along with checking his blood sugar levels 10 times a day, Elijah’s family is training an alert service dog.
Elijah’s wish involved a three-day visit to Disney World where he and his family were picked up by Park Avenue Limo service in Orlando and taken to Wyndham Lake Buena Vista, a popular hotel in the middle of Walt Disney World. After arriving in Orlando in the morning, the family spent the rest of that first day visiting I-Drive 360, home of the 400-foot Orlando Eye, the Sea Life Aquarium and Madame Tussauds.
The next day was spent seeing all the wonder that a Disney World adventure brings and finishing the day with a complimentary meal at the House of Blues. Elijah’s family started their second day in Disney with a breakfast at their hotel’s Lakeview Restaurant where they received a special visit from two of Disney’s Fab Five characters. After another fun-filled day at the park, Elijah and his family dined at Garden Grove in the Swan Resort of Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resort.
Elijah had one final day to enjoy Disney World before ending his travel adventure at Big River Grille & Brewing Works located at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn & Villa. The next morning, after he and his family packed up their happy memories, Park Avenue Limo once again whisked them to the airport for their flight home.
