“Whether it is with a smile, a look, or asking you to play, Rania’s hero personality shines through”
At a mere 4 years old, Rania is very familiar with meeting nurses, doctors, and surgeons. After all, she had her first open heart surgery when she was just eight days old and her second when she was only 6 months old.
Recently she had to stay six weeks at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami while being treated for the HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) and VSD (ventricular septal defect) that she was born with. HLHS is a rare congenital heart defect in which the left ventricle of the heart is severely underdeveloped. In addition to having only half of a properly functioning heart, Rania has VSD, a hole in her heart.
Even through catherizations, chest tubes, and surgeries, little Rania has remained strong. She has had a grand total of eight heart procedures and was in a coma for weeks. Don’t let her size fool you though; Raina is a fighter. Heart defects are no match for her determined spirit and indomitable will.
According to her nominating child life specialist, she “doesn’t let her diagnosis or how she feels get in the way of connecting with people. Whether it is with a smile, a look, or asking you to play with her, Rania’s hero personality shines through.”
It is with great pleasure that we honor Rania’s bravery by recognizing her as Kids Wish Network’s along with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Hero of the Month.
