Enjoying the sunshine on a lazy summer afternoon while taking turns riding his bike with his brother should have been the recipe for a perfect day for 6-year-old Louisville native Blaedyn. His plans were derailed when he lost control of his bike and collided with a wooden fence, resulting in a life altering injury. Blaedyn was admitted to Kosair Children’s Hospital in the wake of his accident where he underwent orthopedic surgery in the amputation of two toes on his left foot. With the innocence only someone his age possesses, Blaedyn proceeded to ask his mom if they would grow back.
During the two days that Blaedyn was hospitalized, his quiet bravery shone through his deliberate demeanor and battle-face of stoicism. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and Blaedyn certainly qualifies as a boy with a Herculean sprit of strength. He was the picture of courage in the face of both tremendous physical and psychological pain.
“You can tell he’s starting to feel more comfortable as he sometimes shows his spunkiness,” writes his nominating child life specialist. She goes on to praise Blaedyn for coping “through playing with his LEGOS and cars, taking his time processing his emotions on his own terms.”
It is with great pride that we honor Blaedyn by recognizing him as Kids Wish Network along with Kosair Children’s Hospital’s Hero of the Month.
