“Austin was extremely positive throughout everything”
After developing extreme pain in his legs, 16-year-old Austin was admitted to Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for evaluation. Doctors quickly discovered several blood clots that needed surgery. The day following his admission, Austin underwent a thrombectomy and required several stents* to be placed in order to remove and prevent the clots.
*A stent is a wire mesh stainless steel tube that holds an artery or vein open and keeps it from closing again; it becomes a permanent part of the body.
This procedure lasted over 3 ½ hours, all while Austin was awake and lying on his stomach. Following the surgery, Austin stayed in the PICU for six days as doctors worked on balancing out his medications to prevent clots in the future. Finally, Austin was transferred to pediatrics where he stayed for another few days.
Austin dealt with his painful medical struggle with bravery and extreme positivity. Kids Wish Network is proud to honor him as Hero of the Month along with the team at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital!
