Boy injured in accident, honored as Hero of the Month

Jacob Azulay-r2

CHATSWORTH, Cali. (May 20, 2015): Together with Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, children’s charity Kids Wish Network is excited to honor California 10-year-old Jacob Azulay as a 2015 Hero of the Month. Jacob was nominated for the award after surviving a traumatic accident and facing its medical after-effects.

“Thank you so much for making Jacob feel so special and honored,” said Jacob’s mom Melinda Azulay.

Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Month program recognizes children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have faced and overcome difficult circumstances, often enduring a great deal of pain and suffering. While they may not suffer from a life-threatening illness, these Heroes have dealt with life-altering situations, demonstrating extreme bravery and courage.

After surviving a traumatic accident, 10-year-old Jacob is now bravely battling another trauma. As a result of the accident, Jacob needed four surgeries to correct the damage to his leg and foot. Among these surgeries was the amputation of several of Jacob’s toes; something that has been difficult for the young man to face.

While admitted to Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, Jacob worked diligently with his Child Life team on pain management, addressing anxiety, worries, and had the opportunity to look at his “new” foot for the first time.

“Jacob did great working with Child Life,” writes his nominating Child Life Specialist Misti Lindquist. “Through all of Jacob’s experiences, he continues to be polite, use kind words, verbalize his needs, and does his very best to cooperate with staff.”

With the help of his Child Life team, Jacob has been able to bravely face multiple surgeries and cope with the loss of his toes and changes in his physical appearance. Along with Kaiser Permanente, Kids Wish Network is proud to honor Jacob as a Hero of the Month!

Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center is one of hundreds of facilities across the United States that works with Kids Wish Network to honor brave kids. Each facility is able to nominate up to five Heroes per month, and each Hero is recognized with a Kids Wish Network certificate, t-shirt, and gift card.
