“The highlight of his day was meeting the cast of Cars”
It was a traumatic first week of life for now 5-year-old Oregon native Tristan who was diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia after rapid weight loss in infancy.
“He was jaundiced and kept vomiting. I knew something wasn’t quite right. I knew the difference between spit up and vomit” said mom, Kristen.
Unlike most children his age, Tristan is on a strict regimen of medication that he must take four times a day. These help regulate the adrenal and keep salt in his body. Without it, he would die. His illness has affected his size and weight as well. If he doesn’t have enough medication, he has a fast growth spurt, but if he has too much then he doesn’t grow at all.
Most young boys’ dream vacation involves Mickey Mouse as well as lots of toys, and Tristan was no different. With the help of Kids Wish Network, Tristan was able to take an enviable trip to Disney and LEGOLAND.
It was love at first sight for the LEGOLAND newbie who had a spectacular time learning from one of their master builders and then making his own LEGO man. The fun continued when Tristan visited Disneyland where the highlight of his day was the meet and great with the cast of Cars. The rollercoaster buff was on cloud nine going from ride to ride around the park without having to wait thanks to a magic genie get out of line free card.
To top it all off, Amazing Cakes baked him a Hulk cake and decorated cupcakes with the logo of his favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. With such delicious desserts made with Tristan in mind, it only makes sense that his dinners be equally wonderful. California Pizza Kitchen, Islands Restaurant and the Pirates Dinner Adventure each rose to the challenge and went “above and beyond” their wildest expectations recalls Kristen.
California Pizza Kitchen gave him a chef’s jacket and more LEGOS (because you can’t ever really have enough) sponsored by Disney. They even had a connection with Kidz Bop who is sending Tristan his very own karaoke machine in addition to the hats, t-shirts, and CDs that he already received! Islands Restaurant adorned his table with balloons in his favorite color, orange. The pirates particularly won Tristan over by gifting him with bandanas to match their own, securing his status as a fellow swashbuckler ready to set sail in search of buried treasure. Overall, Tristan’s experience “was so amazing” in every way, adds Kristen.
While still facing the challenge of managing his illness, Tristan is currently excelling in math and reading at school as well as playing community sports such as baseball and basketball at his local recreational center.
